Love From Luke Blood Drive
As the annual blood donation takes place once again, we are all provided with the opportunity to donate blood and save 3 lives!
The Love from Luke blood drive is a yearly event that takes place at Discovery College, providing all students at the age of 16 or above with the opportunity to donate blood to save lives. This year it was hosted on March 3rd. Once the blood is donated, donors are able to track the way their blood has been used, allowing them to directly understand the impact their blood can have on another’s life.
Here’ is a brief comment from Luke, the leader of the Love from Luke blood drive committee; “We want to express our gratitude to all of the students, faculty, and families for your tremendous support and drive, which had such a profound impact on our community.”
From encouraging students to sign up for blood donation, to facilitating contact with the Red Cross organization, the blood drive committee was very passionate about this annual project and constantly engaged. The team consisted of both Year 12 and 13 students, and was supervised by Ms. Martina O’Connor.
It is important to express our sincere gratitude to the Hong Kong Red Cross for partnering with us for the fourth year in a row. Without them, the Love From Luke Blood Drive would not be possible. All of the staff participating in this event were very professional and made the donation experience as seamless as possible.
Congratulations to every student that was able to donate, every donation that has been made has the potential to save up to 3 lives. We not only had students eagerly engage but also teachers. Many teachers participated in the blood drive, acting as role models to many nervous participants.
The blood drive was additionally opened to the local community, and many supportive parents and members of the Discovery Bay community chose to commute to the school and partake in the drive.
Though the majority of the drive was positive a few willing participants were unable to donate due to reasons such as low iron or previous residence. In light of this, it’s important to put heavy emphasis on the posts made by Love from Luke that describe how to prepare before the blood test as well as the conditions people must meet to donate.
Don't feel discouraged if you were unable to donate this year; there will be many more opportunities, including the blood drive next year. If you would like to donate in your own time before the next blood drive, you can access the Red Cross website online to book an appointment at one of the many Red Cross locations across Hong Kong.
