Highlights

Year 7

This year, the "Visual Arts 101" unit for Y7 students take a dive into the formal qualities and a wide range of media in the visual arts. They explore visual elements, compositional detail and overall design principles that contribute to the impact of artworks. Through analysing various pieces, they conduct relevant research that deepens their understanding of the key concept--Aesthetics. Through exploring of a range of materials and techniques, students discover each medium's expressive elements and their interests in the realm of Visual Arts.

Year 8

The "Selfie Portrait" unit Year 8 Visual Arts allows students to explore personal identity through self-portraiture. Focused on the concept of identity, students will investigate how their individual expression can reflect their unique narratives. Engaging with the works of notable portrait artists who use symbolic elements to convey themes of identity. Students enhance their drawing skills by studying facial features and proportions, ultimately leading to their final self-portrait. The unit encourages self-reflection through mind-mapping their identities and integrating significant symbols into their artwork.

Year 9

In Year 9, they are doing a unit called "In My Mind" which explores the surrealism movement. The primary medium for this unit is watercolour, and students are experimenting with techniques such as wet-on-wet, dry brushing, splattering, and preserving white spaces. They have been studying colour theory in more detail, focusing on complementary colours and shades of grey. Students are also exploring how the creative influence of the mind can challenge our perception of reality.

Year 10

This year, our year 10 students have spent their time studying abstract art, and created one of their own using acrylic paint. This process included researching abstract artists, analysing abstract paintings, and doing practicals with acrylic paint to prepare for their final project. They created their own color palettes and originated their own painting styles, all referencing off of one landscape image. Once all was planned out and ready, students spent over 2 weeks sketching, painting, and finalising their artworks, which was then displayed in the DC foyer for all to see.

Year 11

Year 11 Visual Art students have been working on their 'Cultural Condiments' still life paintings, which explore the themes of identity and culture. Each student chose a specific artistic style that resonated with them, from pop art to realism. The paintings depicted various condiments that held unique personal and cultural significance to each student, encouraging them to reflect on the potential of the still life painting to serve as a platform for cross-cultural dialogue.

Year 12

Year 12 DP Visual Art students have been working hard on their printmaking unit! Experimenting with various types of prints such as linocuts, cyanographs, and collagraphs, allows students to showcase their creativity, test out new and interesting processes, and build up their process portfolios. Students have also been working on their 2nd comparative study, based around artworks they'd seen in person in an earlier trip to the M+ museum.

Year 13

Year 13 DP Visual Art students have been working hard on their pieces for their own unique portfolios, in preparation for the DP Visual Arts Exhibition "Awakening Imagination." As this is coming up soon, students have been going to the art room frequently (even on Saturday mornings!) to finalise their pieces, as well as their process portfolios and comparative studies. The refining of their artistic visions and the cultivation of their own collections is something we should all be looking forward to!
