To Do Or Not To Do, That Is The Question.
A deep dive into how procrastination has affected very intellectual people, and how to overcome this.
To do, or not to do, that is the question.
As I have been a part of Discovery College from Year 1 to Year 11, I have constantly been evolving throughout my life, whether it's by month or year. I always improve every single day in all types of aspects. However, there's one thing that I’ve just never been able to improve, and that is procrastination. Procrastination is the all evil^(0.5) (root of all evil). No matter the class, the person, or the task, procrastination is something that I face every day in my life and I always catch myself thinking, whether I do it or not.
However, times have changed…
I have recently joined year 11, and I realised that procrastinating tasks wouldn't work anymore. An example of this would be when I was doing my Personal Project tasks, I kept delaying my overall work progress to the point where I was so behind that I had to have a meeting with my teacher because of this embarrassment and setback, it became ingrained within my system to never procrastinate again.
This led to the discovery of a method to overcome procrastination, and that is Fear.
When a deadline becomes so imminent that the fear of failure, embarrassment or negative consequences outweighs the overall laziness, the fight or flight response shifts to fight. The fear of a deadline which can create so much urgency it pushes us to force an action, breaking the cycle of avoidance.
But to prevent the deadline from being that close, I immediately complete the work to allow myself to have free time straight after the deadline is assigned, removing that fear of embarrassment and negative consequences.
Now why should YOU care?
No matter your age, year group you're in, or task your assigned to, you may face a situation where you procrastinate, your not alone, around 95% of the people in the world admit to constantly procrastinating. This isn't a problem that only YOU face, its a problem we ALL face.
What I want you to do the next time you work is I want you to think about what could go wrong if you didn't submit it, if you build this fear and despair within yourself, you’ll never ever face procrastination again.
Procrastination is like art
Procrastination is something that everyone faces, but being able to overcome this almost makes it art, not physical art but conceptual art. Whenever you do a task and you finish it extremely early, people might think that you work well, but it's almost art if you look deeper. It represents the effort, time, and almost a passion within you to complete things, truly something conceptual.
