How has this rapidly evolving tool contributed to the growth of both students and workers in Hong Kong, or what potential impact could it bring to students or these workers?
Over the course of thousands of years, the topic of technological advancement and progressive sophistication has been a widely and vastly pondered topic, not only by developers of these technologies themselves, but also the people who follow up with this evolving technology. This article will consider the impacts of Artificial Intelligence on students in a school of Hong Kong, and the potential impacts it could bring to the workforce.
Artificial Intelligence is one of the most ingenious ideas that mankind has come up with. It is extremely helpful, useful in a variety of different scenarios and can also be of great utility in the workplace. What is Artificial Intelligence? Well, Artificial Intelligence as the name suggests, is intelligence which is not human. It is a way in which computers can do things and solve problems which only a human mind can do. It is a rapidly evolving form of self-teaching that has been cultivated by computers for many years. Human programmers provide the computer with a series of instructions and rules that they need to follow, and the computer builds on this information provided to them and can teach themselves better and faster than humans can.
Now, this is where the problem starts. Artificial Intelligence is a very powerful and useful tool, but could it get to a point where it can overtake humans? It is possible. But, as AI is currently under development, the idea of the machine world overtaking humankind could still be very far away. Since Artificial Intelligence is surpassing human knowledge and learning rate, how can it be used to our advantage? Students all over the world have been using this technology lately, especially when it comes to home-schooling (possibly linked to the covid period) and also personal study at home. “Large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT are presenting schools with unique challenges. On the one hand, if used properly, they can enable students to produce higher-quality work at a faster rate. On the other, parts of coursework that used to take hours can now potentially be done in a matter of minutes.”, (Young, 2024).
Students in Discovery College, are oftentimes relying on Artificial Intelligence as a source of checking, or marking their work. Some children decide to take their work and paste it into an Artificial Intelligence ChatBot and check for any punctuation errors. Although this may sound like an efficient process to effectively check unprecedented and unnoticed mistakes, it can also be a large problem as the student will not be learning from their mistakes and will also not be able to know where they got wrong. This is something that even teachers have been noticing. This habit, although can allow the students to score a larger mark, can also be easily unveiled by the teachers, using apps designed by Artificial Intelligence.
The rapid rise in the development of Artificial Intelligence can have a significant effect on the Hong Kong economic industry. By embracing different tools avArtificial Intelligencelable from Artificial Intelligence, economic growth can accelerate faster, and according to a PWC survey, can increase Hong Kong employees' productivity by 40%. These results may sound really interesting and convincing that Artificial Intelligence is an amazing tool for work and technical matters. As mentioned previously, Artificial Intelligence can be great for boosting ideas, and perhaps even productivity. But will Artificial Intelligence really help people improve creativity and boost originality in individuals? This question has been pondered over a lot. A Harvard Business Review mentioned that the people who work in the areas of writing, editing, and also creating images need a measure of creativity and uniqueness in ideas. But now that Artificial Intelligence is in place, it could be ‘crowding out authentic human creativity.’
Now, will the children around Hong Kong still be developing in cases of the use of Artificial Intelligence? Teachers have mixed feelings regarding that. The majority of Teachers in Discovery College believe that Artificial Intelligence should not be used for classwork, but is great for helping out in research. People who utilise Artificial Intelligence tend to not cite their work. This is because they either do not know how to cite Artificial Intelligence, or they do not want to, as it is much easier not to. Children who do this in Discovery College are not always caught, but they do not get away with this all the time. As mentioned previously, teachers utilise tools that can track the use of Artificial Intelligence, meaning that they will be exposed. Therefore, the students now are more careful when they are utilising this tool, and if they will do so in the first place. Some students simply refrain from doing so for personal reasons.
Overall, Artificial Intelligence has been having a major impact on students around Hong Kong, specifically students in Discovery College, as we have covered in this article, and could also have a potential impact on people in the workforce around Hong Kong, who are currently not utilising Artificial Intelligence for work. The question of whether it is a good source of information or a study tool is still debatable amongst many. Therefore, that decision should be made by each individual, by each school, and by each company which intends to utilise this tool in the near future.
