Ebisubashi Bridge/Dotonbori

On your visit to Osaka, you most definitely can't miss the iconic Ebisubashi Bridge in the vibrant Dotonbori area. Ebisubashi Bridge is located in what's called the “南 Minami” (south) area of Osaka. The area is most famously known as Dotonbori, named after the  Dotonbori River which encapsulates the lively spirit of this amazing city. Well, you may think, isn’t this just another mini Tokyo? If so you would be horribly wrong. At the Ebisubashi Bridge, you can find stunning views and striking neon lights unique to Osaka, serving as the perfect place to embrace the atmosphere and snap a few photos. One of the most photographed spots in the area is the iconic Glico Man sign, which lights up the sky at night. The contrast of light and dark makes for a perfect backdrop for your selfies, just make sure to hit the iconic pose. Just a short stroll from the bridge, you can also find yourself in an area which perfectly defines the term “a food lover’s paradise”. The area is most famous for its street food, from takoyaki, and okonomiyaki, which you can enjoy while exploring the area. Whether you love wandering around shops, indulging in delicious bites, or simply taking in the spectacular sights - Ebisubashi Bridge and Dotonbori offer a great experience that captures the essence and spirit of Osaka.

Osaka Castle

Osaka Castle is another stunning landmark that beautifully represents the city’s rich history and cultural heritage. Surrounded by lush gardens and moats, this iconic castle offers a glimpse into Japan’s feudal past and is a must-visit for any visitors. Osaka Castle is located in the “中央 Chūō-ku” (Central Ward) of the city surrounded by the enormous Osaka Castle Park. As you approach the castle, you’ll be captivated by its majestic traditional architecture, featuring ornate roofs and vibrant green accents that elegantly contrasts with the skyline. The surrounding park can not be forgotten either, a place perfect for leisurely strolls, picnics, and photography, especially during the 2 weeks of “Mankai” (full bloom) period during the cherry blossom (Sakura) season when the trees are in their peak stage of glory. Personally, I recommend you spend your time inside the actual castle - you can explore the museum inside which showcases artifacts and exhibits related to the castle’s history (Samurai stuff!) and the life of its famous owner, Toyotomi Hideyoshi (shogun). The panoramic views from the top floor also cannot be missed, providing a breathtaking backdrop of the city, and making it a great spot for capturing memorable photos. Whether you’re a history buff or are simply looking to appreciate the beauty of Osaka, Osaka Castle offers an eventful experience which distinctly highlights the city’s culture.

Tsūtenkaku/Shinsekai

Tsūtenkaku Tower is a fascinating symbol of nostalgia and a glimpse into the city’s early 20th century. This iconic tower, inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, stands at 103 meters and offers astounding views of the bustling local area, making it a must-visit spot for anyone exploring Osaka (Tsutenkaku Tower, n.d.). As you wander through the vibrant and energetic Shinsekai neighborhood, you’ll undoubtedly be transported back in time. The streets are lined with wistful shops, retro arcades, and an array of eateries serving local favourites like kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers). The lively atmosphere at both day and night is perfect for those looking to experience the unique charm of old Osaka. If you get the chance, I strongly recommend that you climb to the observation deck of Tsūtenkaku, as it provides breathtaking panoramic views of the city of Osaka. Don’t forget to snap some photos with the towers as your backdrop if you don't get the chance to climb it! Along with the tower, the area is also home to the iconic Billiken statue, a cute smiling figure which is believed to bring good luck and happiness. Whether you’re savoring delicious street food or soaking in the historical vibes, Tsūtenkaku and Shinsekai offer an unforgettable experience that perfectly showcases the heart and soul of Osaka.
