Green Cobras at Discovery College
Who are we and what do we do?
Green Cobras is a student-lead sustainability group at DC which aims to educate and raise awareness about environmental issues through our many initiatives.
Who are the Green Cobras?
The Green Cobras are a group of Discovery College students passionate about the environment. Through collaboration with fellow students and teachers, as well as the ESF community, we are able to take action against significant environmental issues which impact us all.
What are our goals and how do we achieve them?
Our key goals are to educate, advocate and initiate. Green Cobras highlights the importance of taking action as the harmful impacts of human activity becomes more and more visible. We believe advocating for our planet is crucial and we hope to make a difference by creating a more sustainable school community.
There are many initiatives Green Cobras has successfully carried out to achieve our goals, and we hope to have the same success in the future. Here are some of our past and current initiatives:
How do we achieve these goals?
With our goal to educate in mind, we plan to work with younger students at DC to teach them about environmental issues. We created the Green Cobras Primary CCA for students from Years 3-6 in which the lessons are based around learning through creativity. They learn about climate change, endangered animals, biodiversity, sustainability and more. Through the use of arts and crafts and fun activities, we encourage them to think about these issues and how they affect our planet. We have also presented to Primary using Captain Cobra (a saviour of the environment) to make the experience more engaging and memorable.
We primarily advocate for our planet through the Green Cobra’s social media (Instagram). After researchers have investigated a popular or latest environmental topic the social media team designs posts for the media page. These posts are a great way to inform the wider community on environmental topics and what they can do to help as well as show what the Green Cobras are up to.
To initiate our projects we put a lot of effort into planning activities that are achievable and have an impact. We organise fundraisers that everyone can be involved in; for example, we recently held a fundraiser to raise donations for the WWF in which from 5 teachers representing each of the 5 houses, the one with the most votes (through donations) would have to dye their hair the corresponding house colour. This type of community fundraiser creates excitement and furthers the benefit of the initiative. We have also organised beach clean-ups around DB, allowing us to expand our community reach and be more hands-on.
Why should you join
Green Cobras is a great way to give back to the community and work on global issues that affect us all in our everyday lives. Our roles encourage creativity and service in all aspects, so you can positively engage in different activities and initiatives. Whether you have a passion for the environment or simply want to contribute to the improvement of our community then Green Cobras is a group you can be proud to join.
What can YOU do
Remember, there are many ways in which you can take part in supporting the environment even if Green Cobras isn’t the right group for you. By being mindful of your everyday activities and habits such as using public transport, taking your own bags to the supermarket, switching off lights and air conditioning, buying less meat, etc., you can reduce your environmental impact. Last of all, don't forget to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!
